What is a Peppol ID?

A Peppol ID is a unique identification number that allows an organisation to register on the Peppol network. This network enables businesses and public sector bodies around the world to securely and consistently exchange electronic documents, such as e-invoices. With a Peppol ID, systems can identify exactly where to deliver an e-invoice.

Why is a Peppol ID important?

A Peppol ID ensures that your organisation is visible and reachable on the Peppol network. Without a Peppol ID, you cannot send or receive e-invoices through the system. For many organisations, using Peppol for e-invoicing is essential because it:

  • is quicker and more secure than traditional invoicing
  • reduces errors caused by manual data entry
  • allows for direct integration with accounting or ERP systems

Peppol is being adopted in more and more countries, with electronic invoicing increasingly becoming a legal requirement for businesses.

The different Peppol Identifiers

A Peppol ID consists of two parts: a Scheme ID and a Participant ID. Together, they create a unique address on the Peppol network, e.g. 0208:0123456789.

Common Scheme IDs include:

  • 0088: Stands for GLN (Global Location Number), used internationally by businesses with multiple locations or departments.
  • 9930: Refers to a D-U-N-S number (Data Universal Numbering System), commonly used by organisations in the United States.

The Scheme ID indicates which type of identifier is being used within the Peppol ID.

How do you get a Peppol ID?

You receive a Peppol ID when your organisation is registered through a Peppol Access Point, a certified service provider that connects you to the Peppol network. Once the registration process is complete, your organisation is assigned a unique Peppol ID.

Many accounting and invoicing software platforms can manage this registration for you, meaning you automatically receive a valid Peppol ID when you start using their system.

Can you have multiple Peppol IDs?

Yes, it is possible to have more than one Peppol ID. Some organisations choose to register multiple identifiers, for example, one based on their VAT number and another based on their GLN or company registration number.

This can be useful when clients or countries require a specific type of identifier, or when a business operates under multiple legal entities.

How to look up a Peppol ID

Do you need to find a company’s Peppol ID? In most cases, you can search in the official Peppol Directory, which lists registered organisations around the world. You can search by company name, registration number, or VAT number to locate the correct Peppol ID before sending an e-invoice.

Some invoicing and accounting systems also have built-in Peppol ID lookup tools, allowing you to find the right ID directly from your software.

What if you send an invoice to the wrong Peppol ID?

If you send an e-invoice to the wrong Peppol ID, it may not reach the intended recipient. Unfortunately, once the document is sent through the Peppol network, it cannot be retrieved.

If this happens, you should:

  • Correct the Peppol ID in your system
  • Issue a credit note for the incorrect invoice
  • Resend the invoice to the correct Peppol ID

To prevent this, always double-check Peppol IDs before sending and manage them carefully within your invoicing process.
