Peppol (Pan-European Public Procurement Online) is an international network that enables secure and standardised electronic document exchange—such as e-invoices and purchase orders—between businesses and public sector organisations. Its main objective is to simplify e-invoicing across borders and sectors, ensuring interoperability and compliance with local and EU regulations.

How does Peppol work?

Peppol is built on a four-corner model that ensures fast, secure and structured data exchange between trading partners. Here’s how it works:

  • Sender – The business or organisation issuing the invoice.
  • Sender’s Access Point – A certified provider that connects the sender to the Peppol network and formats the invoice accordingly.
  • Receiver’s Access Point – The provider that receives the invoice and passes it on to the intended recipient.
  • Receiver – The organisation receiving the e-invoice or document.

Each party only needs to connect once—to their Access Point. From there, they can send and receive Peppol documents with any other participant worldwide. The Access Points communicate directly, making the process efficient, safe, and fully traceable.

Benefits of using Peppol

Using Peppol e-invoicing comes with clear advantages:

  • Faster invoice processing – Speeds up approval and payment cycles.
  • Fewer manual errors – Structured data minimises entry mistakes.
  • Compliance – Meets current and future e-invoicing regulations.
  • Improved cash flow – Timely payments mean healthier finances.
  • Secure data exchange – Documents travel safely via certified channels.

With Peppol, you’re not just digital—you’re connected in a smarter, more reliable way.

The difference between Peppol and traditional invoicing

While many organisations still send invoices as PDF attachments via email, Peppol e-invoicing provides a smarter and more secure alternative. The table below outlines the key differences between traditional invoicing and using the Peppol network—so you can clearly see why making the switch is a step forward.

Payt is currently working on enabling the automatic conversion of invoices into fully structured UBL files. This will ensure that you are prepared for future requirements regarding e-invoicing via Peppol.

What is a Peppol Access Point?

A Peppol Access Point is your gateway to the Peppol network. It ensures that your invoices and other documents are formatted, validated and securely delivered to the correct recipient. Every organisation using Peppol connects via one of these certified gateways.

At Payt, we work closely with Econnect, a certified Peppol Access Point provider. This partnership ensures that your invoices are seamlessly delivered via Peppol, while you continue working in the familiar Payt environment—no extra hassle, just reliable e-invoicing.
